Alif Ba K.S.C.C. Holding Company
Kuwait City · Established 2016

Capital that stays.

Alif Ba Holding Company is a family-owned investment house in Kuwait City. We take significant positions in technology companies at seed and Series A, lead or anchor the rounds we join, and hold them with the patience that permanent capital allows. Co-investors join us through Alif Ba Ventures, the firm's fund platform.

The mandate

Permanent capital, deliberately placed.

Alif Ba invests the capital of its shareholders through a Kuwaiti closed shareholding company. That permanence sets the tempo: a position is taken when conviction is complete, and held for as long as the business rewards patience.

Approach

Concentration, by design.

A small number of positions, taken deliberately and usually led, in technology companies and the operating businesses built around them.

How we decide
After the wire

Technology at the front, operations at the core.

Setting the terms places an obligation on us beyond capital. We take a board seat and bring what a Kuwaiti holding company is genuinely placed to bring: licensing, banking, premises, procurement, and the family's network across Gulf finance.

Network

Who we sit alongside.

A firm is measured by the rooms it can open for a founder. Three relationships matter most, and a holding company with permanent capital is a steady co-investor alongside institutional funds.

The people
Proposition

What permanent capital makes possible.

Alif Ba invests the capital of its shareholders through a Kuwaiti closed shareholding company. That permanence sets the tempo: a position is taken when conviction is complete, and held for as long as the business rewards patience.

It also shapes the portfolio. Permanent capital favours a small number of meaningful holdings, each close enough to be understood and large enough to be supported through every stage of its growth.

Principles

What we hold to.

Three working commitments, kept by the investment committee and felt first by the founders we back.

I

We lead.

We price the round, set its terms and take a seat at the table. A meaningful stake gives a founder a partner able to stand behind the business, and under Kuwaiti company law it allows a holding company to finance and guarantee the companies it backs.

II

We move at the pace of understanding.

A structured path from first note to completion, with every finding recorded and resolved. Founders receive a clear answer, and they receive it from the people who make the decision.

III

We reserve before we commit.

Capital for later rounds is set aside at entry, so a company that performs is funded from a decision already made.

The Firm

A family investment house, built for the long view.

A Kuwaiti closed shareholding company in the holding sector, registered in Kuwait City and directed to a single purpose: to hold, lead and develop investments in technology companies and the businesses around them.

Constitution

A holding company under Kuwaiti law.

Kuwait's Companies Law defines a holding company by its object: to invest in shares, membership interests or investment units in Kuwaiti or foreign companies and funds, to participate in establishing such companies, to finance and guarantee those in which it holds at least twenty percent, to own intellectual property, and to manage and develop the businesses it holds.

That definition is the whole of our activity, and the twenty percent threshold is one of the reasons we lead. A holding company with a real position can stand behind a portfolio company financially as well as strategically.

History

Ten years, one narrowing purpose.

The company's record is a matter of public filing, and we set it out here in full. A history offered openly is read more generously than one discovered.

2016

Established

Incorporated in Kuwait City as a closed shareholding company in the holding sector.

2019

Reorganised as Alif Ba

The company adopted the Alif Ba Holding name, reconstituted its board at three members, and simplified its capital structure.

2020

Boxit and Albumii

The company led rounds in Boxit, the Gulf valet self-storage platform, and Albumii, the Kuwaiti photo-printing application: its first two technology positions.

2021

Consolidation

The portfolio was held and supported through the period, and the balance sheet simplified in preparation for distribution.

2022

Return to distribution

A cash dividend of 7 percent was approved for the 2022 financial year, the first distribution on the company's record.

2024

Anona

The company led a round in Anona, the Kuwaiti subscription meal-plan service, its third led position.

2025

A deliberate reset

The shareholders renewed the board in full for a three-year term and set the company's paid-up capital at KD 2.1 million, the level the concentrated strategy requires.

2026

A new chapter

Activity is directed to a single strategy: concentrated positions at seed and Series A, usually led, in technology-enabled operating businesses in the Gulf.

Governance

How decisions are made.

The board reserves investment decisions above a defined threshold to itself and delegates the remainder to an investment committee operating under written terms of reference. Every investment carries a written memorandum, an independent valuation dated within three months, and a signed conflicts declaration made before the decision is taken.

Consolidated financial statements are prepared annually to International Financial Reporting Standards and audited by Al-Nisf and Partners, the BDO member firm in Kuwait. The share register is kept by Gulf Custody Company, and the company maintains a beneficial ownership register with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Structure

Two layers, one investment committee.

The firm invests through two vehicles that share one team, one process and one set of terms. The holding company carries the family's permanent capital and anchors every commitment. Alif Ba Ventures carries the capital of co-investors and limited partners who wish to invest alongside it, deal by deal or across a portfolio.

Mandate

What we do, stated plainly.

  • StrategyTechnology and technology-enabled operating businesses, with a preference for education, health, financial services, supply chain, and climate and infrastructure
  • StageSeed and Series A, with reserves for follow-on through Series B
  • PositionWe lead or anchor the round, price it, and take a board seat
  • PortfolioConcentrated. A small number of positions, each actively supported
  • GeographyKuwait and the Gulf. Qatar and Saudi Arabia are the expansion markets we help companies enter; companies elsewhere qualify with a credible route into the region
  • CommitmentUSD 500,000 to 2,000,000 at entry, with a reserve of similar size held for later rounds
  • OwnershipTen to twenty-five percent, the range at which a board seat is earned and a holding company may stand behind the business
  • Alongside fundsWe co-invest with institutional venture funds, take our pro-rata in later rounds, and make selective commitments to funds with a Gulf thesis
  • VehiclesThe holding company's own balance sheet, and Alif Ba Ventures for co-investors and limited partners
Process

Three steps, the first of them short.

The order matters: a quick decision on whether a company merits real work, then the work, then the argument.

I

Screen

A single page: company, stage, instrument, amount, and fit against the mandate. A first answer within ten business days of a complete note, in either direction.

II

Diligence

Four to six weeks of commercial, financial, technical, legal and integrity review, sized to the commitment. Findings are recorded with their weight and their resolution, and open items stay visible until they are closed.

III

Decide

A memorandum that opens with the recommendation and then argues the strongest case against it. The committee reads the case against first, and a term sheet follows approval within the week.

Engagement: a one-page note to begin, a first answer within ten business days, and a term sheet within a week of approval.

After the wire

What leading a round asks of us.

Setting the terms places an obligation on us beyond capital. We take a board seat, and we bring what a Kuwaiti holding company is genuinely placed to bring: company formation and commercial licensing in Kuwait, introductions to Kuwaiti banks, operational premises, a path into government and corporate procurement, and the family's network across Gulf finance. We stay close enough to see a problem before it is reported.

Where we can be useful we say so plainly, and where our help would be thin we say that too.

Selection

What we look for.

Founders who know their numbers, a product that customers already pay for, a market that exists before the pitch, and an outcome that can be measured beyond the return. We are comfortable being early on a category and disciplined on price.

  • RevenuePost-revenue, with customers who renew
  • FoundersFounder-led, with the founders holding a meaningful stake after the round
  • Gulf relevanceA business that grows faster with a Kuwaiti partner at the table
  • Path to ownershipA round in which a ten to twenty-five percent position is available to a lead
  • TechnologyA defensible technical advantage, and a measurable step-change over what it replaces
  • ConsequenceAn outcome that can be measured beyond the return: access, learning, health or emissions

We are a small team and we decide quickly. A prompt answer, in either direction, is the most useful thing we can give a founder.

For co-investors and limited partners

Alongside the firm, through Alif Ba Ventures.

Alif Ba Ventures is the platform through which outside capital invests beside the holding company: a pooled fund for those who want the portfolio, and deal-by-deal vehicles for those who want a specific round. The holding company anchors each vehicle with its own capital, on the same terms and at the same time as every other participant, and the firm's reserve for follow-on is decided at entry.

We also co-invest with venture funds we know, take our pro-rata in later rounds, and make selective commitments as a limited partner to funds with a Gulf thesis. For a portfolio company entering Kuwait, we bring licensing, banking, premises and procurement access; for Qatar and Saudi Arabia, we bring introductions.

A house view

Why technology-enabled operating businesses, and why the Gulf.

September 2026

The Gulf technology story of the last decade was written by marketplaces and consumer applications, and the largest outcomes were bought by global platforms that wanted the region's customers. The next decade belongs to a quieter category: operating businesses that use technology to run logistics, storage, payments, healthcare and services better than the incumbents, in markets where the incumbents are still analogue.

These businesses share three features. Their revenue is earned rather than subsidised. Their moat is operational, built from licences, premises, fleets and relationships that take years to assemble in the Gulf and are hard to copy from outside it. And their capital needs are lumpy: a licence, a warehouse or a fleet is a step, and a step needs an investor who can decide on a Kuwaiti timeline rather than a fund cycle.

That is where a holding company earns its place. Under Kuwaiti company law a holding company may finance and guarantee a business in which it holds twenty percent or more, a capacity reserved for shareholders of that scale. Combined with permanent capital, that turns a shareholder into a balance-sheet partner for exactly the moments when an operating business needs one.

Boxit, our first position in this category, is a valet storage business that looks like a consumer app from the outside and a logistics operation from within. It is the shape of company we intend to keep backing: technology at the front, operations at the core, and a Gulf market that rewards whoever builds the physical layer first.

Holdings

Holdings.

Concentration lets us say something about each position rather than show a wall of logos. Each of the three named holdings is a round the firm led.

Case note

Founded in 2014, Boxit had raised a seed round in 2015 before we led its 2020 round of roughly one million US dollars alongside a group of private investors. We set the terms, took the board seat that came with them, and sized our reserve for the next round at entry.

The round funded expansion beyond Kuwait into Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the three markets in which the company operates today. What the board work taught us is the pattern we now look for: a consumer-facing product carried by a logistics operation, where the physical layer, warehouses, fleet and licences, is the moat.

The International Investor Co. K.S.C.C.

Founded and chaired by our own Chairman from 1992. Over three decades it built and exited operating businesses across Asia and the Gulf, among them COURTS Asia, sold to Nojima Corporation of Japan in 2019, and Procco Financial Services, sold to United Electronics Company in the same year. With those disposals complete, its shareholders resolved an orderly voluntary liquidation of the remaining portfolio. The Chairman's investing attention since then has been on Alif Ba.

The wider Al-Bahar family in Kuwaiti finance

Members of the family hold long-standing positions across Kuwaiti financial services, in businesses that are separate from Alif Ba and governed by their own boards. What the relationship gives us is proximity: a short path to people who have priced, governed and exited assets in this market before.
